What did it mean, to Eat Like a King? You must have wondered at some point what a royal dinner was really like. Unfortunately, royal artists have left us very few images. The exhibition aims, through extensive research, to portray the reality of royal banquets both in representation and practice.
Paintings, silverware and fine China tableware from the major Italian courts will tell the fascinating and intriguing story of popes, princes and kings at mealtime. A history that still holds a strong bound on us all.
This enchanting journey is made possible thanks to a partnership between the most important royal palaces in Italy – from the Quirinale to the Royal Palaces of Campodimonte and Caserta, the Royal Palace of Milan, the Pitti Palace, and the Royal Palace of Naples to those in Turin and Florence – and many Italian and European museums which have lent us their artworks.
Curated by Andrea Merlotti with Silvia Ghisotti and Clara Goria
